What are the cliches? A page turner, couldn't put it down, wow, new favorite author. I savor Louise Penny’s novels and an avid Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fan. This novel was not graphic nor did it have a girl, a train, or some other female who had an addiction problem. It was a breath of fresh air from the trendy plots of the past five years. Turton set the bar high with his debut novel. I am jealous of his talent. I kept wondering if he had a whiteboard in front of him with a diagram of the many plot twists and characters. You have to use your brain with this mystery. It's not spoon fed to you. I will not be surprised if this becomes a series with a high production budget. Standing ovation, Mr. Turton! I look forward to more of your creativity.

The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle Stuart Turton Books Reviews

This book is so ridiculously confusing. Lost my way many times. If I could get a headache doing a brain teaser, I would have with this book. Reminds me of those logical deduction brain teasers where you place characters, items, or locations in rows and columns and put in lots of x's to eliminate the pairings that aren't possible.

Sadly, the novelty of this book wasn't enough to get me past the 60% mark. Did not finish. It was just too frustrating to have to challenge myself to confront new scenarios, new characters, and new twists. What a shame, because I was really looking forward to whodunnit.

This is a mystery that keeps moving and changing by the minute, with multiple point of views that are erased each new day. Definitely not your Agatha Christie book which already has a pre-ordained outcome but you just don't know it yet.

Maybe if the author could write this book in the same way, but add more fluff for character development, and much fewer characters and twists, I could actually finish the next version. Remember the old adage keep it simple, stupid.

I give this two stars for enjoyment. I end up with three stars for novelty and daring to bring this concept to market.
I read The Seven and 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton this week. This may be the most convoluted book I have ever read. The author describes this work as a combination of time travel, Agatha Christie and Quantum Leap. If he had thrown in Groundhog Day and Downton Abbey it would be a pretty good description. The narrator comes to himself (or perhaps to somebody else) in the rain in a woods not knowing who he is, where he is, or why he's there. He immediately becomes the earwitness to a murder and seeks to aid the victim and apprehend the killer but the fact that he is wounded and cowardly prevents that. In the first few chapters he learns that he is at a huge but decaying English estate of a decaying aristocratic family who have invited fifty or so of their disreputable guests to a masquerade party on the nineteenth anniversary of the murder of their seven year old son on the night of a ball at the estate with many of the same guests. Further, he learns that he will inhabit the bodies of eight of the guests and servants, one each day for eight days (except they're really all the same day, the day of the murder) and that he is there to solve the murder. (No, not that murder and no, not that murder either, you see, well, it's complicated.) If he fails he will be doomed to repeat the sequence until he succeeds. He's probably already been there a few decades (or at least he would have been if they weren't all the same day).

Now, you may be wondering, who's the bad guy? It's quite simple all of them. Nobody is who he seems and nothing is as it seems. That's why this is so convoluted. The reader sees many incidents numerous times from different perspectives and with different information and that is confounded by the fact that many witnesses are mistaken or lying.

I'm sure this is not everybody's cup of tea but I loved it. It was one of those books I couldn't put down because I wanted to see what would happen next. And there are plenty of surprises. I love time paradoxes and mysteries so this was right up my alley.

Incidentally, one of the ways I judge a book or movie is by how skillfully the exposition is handled. That is because expositions are often artificial and boring. Here the author begins with an invitation to the masquerade identifying many of the characters and the situation. I'd never seen that before.
This book was like attending a murder mystery party! But you didn't need 8 friends to sign up to play with you because you got to be all 8 guests yourself!
The author said in a Q&A(in the back of this book)that this story was inspired by his love of time travel, Agatha Christie, and Quantum Leap. With those three things how could this book be bad?
It was a super fun ride and I would definitely read this again. The book definitely keeps you guessing and keeps you locked in place. Once I got to a certain part in the book, I knew I wouldn't be able to put it down until I was finished or sleep stole me away.

Here is an adjective appropriate for this book Odious. I hated the setting, every one of the characters, the histrionic tone of the narrative, the boring replay of the story. Picture Groundhog Day without the fun. The one thing the author got right each chapter was like living in hell. Needless to say, after reading it for seemingly days and days, I was only 30% finished and I decided to seek my own freedom by jumping ahead to the last few chapters. It ends like any derivative Gothic novel and frankly, I couldn’t care less what happened to any of the characters of the story, whether villain, victim or putative hero. Just one question Can I get my money back for the part I didn’t read?
