Poetry Books Don't Sell! Jr Harry E Gilleland 9781105473470 Books Reviews

Harry Gilleland is a very prolific and eclectic writer. His novels are exciting and attention-grabbing. They will hold the attention for older teenagers and adults alike. His poetry is for those who can understand the nuances and subtle humor, as well as those who enjoy poetry. This book, Poetry Books Don't Sell! is no different. He covers the gamut of poetry with a little prose thrown in for good measure. He has written some more storeoms (story-poems). Added to the mix is rhyming poetry, political poetry, acrostic, free verse and a bonus in the form of flash fiction and prize-winning poems as well as some of his favorites. Pick your favorite and go there or start at the beginning. You will enjoy your sojourn into Harry Gilleland's writing world in either case. And if you buy this book it might make him re-think the title.
My favorite poetry has always been anything humorous. Mr. Gilleland excels in that poetic genre. Take for example The Used-to Age

"I'm now what they call a "senior",
having reached the age of 65.
I'm retired, a job a thing I used to have.
Life is good. I'm happy to be alive."

He describes what led up to his retirement and finishes with
"At my age society considers me spent.
Senior is what they call me; it's my label.
I wonder where all my past abilities went.
I'm "used-to", since I'm no longer able.

Wait until you are a "used-to", then you will understand - or maybe you already do.
Harry E. Gilleland, Jr. is a southerner, born in Macon, Georgia and now residing in Shreveport, Louisiana with his wife, Linda. He retired in 2004 and now can spend all of his time with his passion for writing. During his `formative years', he was a teacher of microbiology and a researcher. He attended the University of Georgia, where he earned a B.S. and a M.S. He returned from three years in the Army to go on to earn his Ph. D. in Microbiology from the University of Georgia and completed a two-year fellowship at the University of Western Ontario. In 1975, he joined the faculty at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana.
I've read and reviewed Harry Gilleland's poetry before and always come away mentally fed when it comes to reading good work like his. Despite the colorful book cover with Harry's signature umbrella, Harry treats his readers to some much more serious tone in this collection.

True, the very first poem tackles the subject of whether or not fairies are for real. But after that, the reader is treated to a variety of storoems (story poems), rhyming poems, acrostics, and free-verse on subjects right from the headlines death, politics, old age, sex, the Gulf oil spill, racism, and marriage to name just a few.

My favorites had to be the poems about nature. Harry and I are both obviously bird watchers. Harry celebrates his back yard birds, and some pesky pigeons in several poems. Harry also observes death from several angles the passing of a loved one, having to put a beloved dog down, having to chop down a favorite tree, and even a hawk attacking a dove in his own back yard.

There's a wonderful autobiography poem called "My Life Thus Far." It's followed by another called "The Used-to Age" where Harry, now in his 60s, looks back at the things he used to be able to do. Here's the last two verses of it which may have a few readers blushing or laughing

And then there is sex...or more accurately
lack of it. To perform would require a pill.
I used to be a real stud; now I'm just a dud.
My sex drive must stay a thing I can't fulfill.

At my age society considers me spent.
"Senior" is what they call me; it's my label.
I wonder where all my past abilities went.
I'm a "used-to", since I'm no longer able.

I experienced a bit of reminiscing of my own upon reading the poem called "Persimmon Seed Forecast," about an old farmers tale that the winter weather could be predicted by studying the seeds of a persimmon. My dad showed this to me one day when I was very young. I was so fascinated by it that I did a 4-H demonstration about it.

What's important is that Harry doesn't hold back. There's an honesty in his work, and he certainly challenges himself. Being a novice poet myself, I was amazed at some of his rhymes and use of words. He's truly a master at unpredictable line breaks, and at telling a story overall in his poetry. That proves true as the book contains several award winning poems.

My own criticism of the work, and it's a very small one, is that I wish it had closed with a few more light hearted poems. I remember Harry's sense of humor from his previous work and though this collection is much more serious, I think leaving the reader on a positive uplifting note would have its advantages.

That being said, I still enjoyed the collection immensely. For those seeking inspiration for words to share in a speech at a wedding, a retirement party, or even a funeral, Harry's poems are perfect for that. Or anyone experiencing loss or possibly caring for someone elderly, there's a poem here for you too.
