I am not an 'artsy' person and when I first started into this book I began wondering about its relevance for me. I am, however, open-minded and so I determined that I would continue reading with an open mind. I'm glad that I did. Although art may be the back-drop of the novel, the true source of the inspiration for the story is love, family, and how lives are interwoven. "No entity is entirely separate from the rest" .....all things are a part of the others.

Having read other Ella Carey books, I had high expectations. THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE intrigued and moved me so that I read it through a second time upon completion. PARIS TIME CAPSULE & FROM A PARIS BALCONY were both interesting and exciting books, well-rounded and enjoyable. Ms. Carey indeed has a gift with words.
It was a great challenge to get through THE THINGS WE DON'T SAY. Chosen on June first, it took 3 weeks to plow through. I try to find redemption in every book any I choose to read are given careful evaluation before beginning. Most redeeming is how the author can weave words and paint a picture. She does a lot of research. This is the reason for the second star. As for the story itself and the characters repetitive, annoying, self-centered, self-righteous, narrow-minded. The choice of past/present style of chapter presentation didn't flow well given the time-passage difference. People who most talk of tolerance are often quite intolerant.
Em was intolerant of any who did not fit her mold, and even intolerant of those in her "Circle" who were not exactly what she wanted. Holding to her principles her whole life? She lived off of family money. The artists who wanted to live "free" had to have the society they disdained in order to have the freedom. As for Laura, blame it on youth (immaturity?), or sticking to principles, but what a stick in the mud. The conversations and lack of questions between her and Ewan - that would have avoided much conflict - were not to be believed.
I'm sorry to be harsh when I've had great appreciation for Ms Carey's previous books. Gushing 4-5 star reviews are a wonder to me. I hope this is an anomaly. I will look for her next book.
A story that intertwines over several decades. Laura discovers that her grandmother Emma’s past loves their and her relationships have caused a crisis in that Laura may have to give up following her dream of finishing the Royal Academy of Music playing the violin. A portrait that Emma’s great love Patrick painted of her is proclaimed by an art appraiser that it was not being painted by him. Most of the people that could vouch or perhaps seen it being painted are deceased. Sketches that Patrick had made over time to prepare for the portrait was in one of the houses that were bombed and destroyed during the war. Very interesting story and surprising ending
Let me say first that this was a well written book. Those who enjoy history, convoluted relationships, and talented artists will likely enjoy this book.

Being basically historical fiction, it is not my preferred genre. I picked this as my June First Read because, like the last couple months, nothing else was offered that interested me. I randomly picked a selection last month, and ended up being happy with it--but this book, I'm afraid, just wasn't really my cup of tea.

The alternating time periods and the historical background didn't really keep me involved. It read pretty slowly for me, and for most of the book I struggled not to put it aside. Although Emma was an interesting character, I couldn't understand some of her actions and decisions. I'm afraid that I found Patrick to be an opportunist and a "user". Also, until the latter part of the story, I wasn't feeling much for Emma's Grandaughter, either. It's difficult, no matter how good a story is, to thoroughly enjoy it if you don't feel connected to the characters. Towards the end, the plot did get more interesting as the mystery of the painting was revealed.

This book was only an "OK" read for me, but others who prefer historical fiction may relish it.
I won't describe the book as some have done. You can read the back of the book for that. This is my reaction after reading this thoughtprovoking book.

I love a good story surrounding history and art. It's even better when offered as a First. I have read other books by this author, so win/win! I found this book to hit a theme I rarely see in fiction. Emma subscribed to a bohemian philosophy, which was continually challenged throughout her lifespan. She occasionally doubted or wanted to react differently than her belief system allowed when life didn't go her way, but always in the end, she continued down that unconventional path. How many of us stick to one philosophy all our lives? I think most of us take the path of least resistance. Or better yet, learn from our mistakes and move on, tweaking our opinions and philosophies as we learn and evolve. Emma's choices had a lasting effect on many people.

Ms. Carey kept my interest with her attention to detail in the world of music, art, and history. The story was so compelling, but the characters were hard for me to relate to or even like. I really liked the comparison of a bohemian family with a conventional family. Which one hides from reality? This question bubbles up in a very subtle way.

If you like mystery, art, history and a very different kind of love story, I highly recommend this book. To me, it wasn't a light read. It touched on some interesting themes about life and love.
